Playden village voice

Last Sunday was St. Swithun’s day. Legend has it that if it rains on that day, it will rain for the next 40 days.

It did! But the jet stream seems to have got itself over our islands and it rains anyway.

On Saturday 21st July - tomorrow - there will be a Traditional Summer Fete in Playden churchyard if the weather permits. There will be stalls, games, a BBQ and a Pimms tent. There will also be books, produce. plants, preserves and refreshments. It all happens from 12 noon and 3.30 pm. If it is a nasty day, then everything will go into the church, but a kind weatherman will hopefully provide a ‘window of opportunity.’

*Heather Coote has sent the following report of the W. I. meeting.

Our meeting this month was the Craft Show. There was a wide range of exhibits which demonstrated the many talents of W. I. members. Our President congratulated the winners of the various awards, and Alison Cade thanked everyone for entering. Joan also said what an enjoyable evening we had had when we celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Special thanks were given to Betty Crosskey, Alison Cade and Amy Breeds for organising the evening and everyone agreed that the food was delicious. Entertainment was provided by Marion Lovell and we all had a good sing-along.

Various notices were given out including the Mystery outing on 17th July, and the Garden Meeting at 23 Fairmeadow in August.

We were then introduced to our speaker, Mrs. Heasman, who gave a very interesting talk on “Where the W.I. has led me..” She brought along a selection of the various craft items that she had made, and told of her many visits to Denman College and how she had progressed through the ranks to become a W. I. Judge.
