Newhaven Port and Properties (NPP) said it was pleased the Supreme Court had ruled in its favour on the West Beach in Newhaven.
The Supreme Court allowed NPP’s appeal against registering the sandy beach as a village green today (Wednesday February 24).
In statement to the Sussex Express NPP said: “NPP are pleased that common sense has prevailed. The Supreme Court has confirmed that land which forms part of a statutory undertaking and is part of the harbour within the statutory limits, and land which is controlled by bylaws cannot be registered as a village green.
“NPP appreciate that this decision will be a disappointment to campaigners, and will now take time to consider the implications of the decision.
“NPP are now focussing on their current plans for the regeneration of the port, which will bring much needed jobs and benefits to the local community.”
