Pleasure Park book

FOND childhood memories come back to Graham Lelliott as he sets out on his latest piece of research - the history of Brooklands Pleasure Park in Worthing.

Today the site offers pony rides, a summertime paddling pool, trikes, trampolines, bouncy castles, indoor ball pool, a children's play park, pirate motor boats and the Diddlys miniature train.

And for thousands of people - Graham included - it has been a key part of their growing up.

"I spent many summers there as a kid with friends and family, and for me the miniature railway was always the best. I remember the one-person battery-powered dodgems which you had to put, I think, a 10p coin in the slot for them to go for a short time.

"There was the paddling pool, the motor boats, trampolines and some large wooden structure with a death slide/zip wire and a concrete tunnel.

"This structure, I believe was eventually taken down due to health and safety reasons!

"Now nearly 32 years of age, seeing these photographs certainly does bring back many happy memories and this is why I am asking if anyone else may have any photographs of Brooklands that they may like published to get in touch either by email or by mobile.

"They do not necessarily need to be in colour, although think that this requirement would produce a better quality publication.

"I wish to compile an A5 size book about the history of Brooklands Pleasure Park.

"It is still in the early stages but I am keen to use the title Brooklands Pleasure Park - A Photographic History In Colour.

"I have over the last few weeks been gathering photographs of the park and hope to receive some more in the next week or so.

"These range from the 1960s to the present day.

"As it explains in the title, this publication will be a photographic history in colour which is completely different to my other five titles I have written on local history."

Anyone able to contribute images or reminiscences should get in touch with Graham on [email protected] or 07793 435428.
