Plenty of ‘Goody News’ for Russell Howard

Inspirational Mike Goody, who in 2008 was blown up while serving with the RAF in Afghanistan, eventually losing his left leg, was the guest of honour on the stand-up comedian’s first show of his latest series on BBC 2.

Mike, formerly of White Horses Way, but who now lives in Felpham, spent six minutes being ‘grilled’ by Howard on everything from what it was like to lose a leg to how he battled back to become one of the stars of this year’s Invictus Games, winning four gold medals and a silver in the pool.

Howard also asked Mike what he can use his leg for, aside from walking and running.

Turns out it is a pretty good glass for a pint or two, as Mike revealed. Laughing, he said he had drunk from it ‘many a time’ and it held ‘three pints’.

There was a more serious note to the interview with Mike later telling how he battled through the ‘dark times’ of alcoholism.

Asked if he missed his leg, the 29-year-old former Angmering School student said: “Not really. I think in the early days I hated the fact I was injured and you go through some awkward times but the two charities that have helped me out more than anything are Help For Heroes and the RAF Benevolent Fund. They’ve helped me throughout all aspects and got me to where I am now; this bright, bubbly, slightly mischievous sort of individual.”
