Polegate: Grand carnival procession

Hundreds of revellers braved chilly conditions to check out the annual event.

Co-organiser Christine Berry said: 'Considering the weather, we were exceptionally lucky it stayed dry for the main procession.

'Those who turned out to support the event clearly enjoyed all that was on offer.'

Although there were fewer floats than last year, spectators were dazzled by entries from the volunteer lifeboat crew and the Morgan Train Gang from Hastings.

Both were awarded commemoration plaques in recognition of their efforts by Mayor Cllr Ivy Scarborough.

Walking entries from Polegate School s Egyptians, Glenisters Flower Shop s Munchkins and the Scout s doctors and nurses also won cups and shields.

Staff from the Co-op supermarket in the High Street added a more adult feel by dressing-up as pupils from St Trinian's!

More than 310 was raised through street collections, which will be split between local charities.

Sussex Police also set-up a special Operation Gnome exhibition in the Town Council offices, and local beat officers pounded the streets giving out leaflets entitled: 'Keep Strangers Out'.

Side shows, stalls and an array of entertainment was also offered to the delight of the crowds.

And earlier in the week, Polegate Windmill managed to raise 82 by selling cream teas and strawberries.

Mrs Berry added: 'A big vote of thanks must go to the marshals, Clarks Roofing and PJ Miniskips for their assistance. Without them, the event could not have happened.'
