Police, councils units to combat drink crime

Alcohol-fuelled crime is becoming a major problem in West Sussex and action is being taken in many places to establish a widespread crackdown on anti-social drinking in public places.

Figures produced by Sussex police show that in one year there have been 1,196 reports of public place violent crime and 2,466 reports of criminal damage.

Crime hot spots include Worthing town centre and Central Ward with 46 per cent of all incidents.

Statistics suggest that out of the total, 1,170 incidents of criminal damage and 932 assaults were 932 assaults were alcohol related. Worthing is to impose a Drinking in Public Places Order by February of next yearf and Bognor Regis and Littlehampton areas expect to have drinking control areas establiszhed soon.
