Police crackdown on illegal driving

Officers have targeted Rye, Brede and Winchelsea in recent weeks to hand out spot fines and warnings for speeding, using mobile phones while behind the wheel and failing to wear seat belts.

Two motorists were caught speeding through historic Winchelsea and were landed with £60 fines and three points on their licence.

PCSO James Armstrong said “Speeding and road safety remains a top priority for all of the villages in the Rye area and Rye Neighbourhood Policing Team is committed to reducing speeds and improving road safety. “

Rye Neighbourhood Policing Team also joined forces with Rother District Council this month to carry out a traffic enforcement operation in New Road at Rye and on the A28 at Brede.

This saw eight £60 fines issued to drivers for not wearing seatbelts and a £60 fine and 3 points to a driver using a mobile phone.

Rother District Council’s Shaun Carter also issued six warnings to commercial vehicle drivers for not having valid waste carrier’s licences.

Earlier in the year Rye police targeted Camber and Winchelsea Beach with similar operations.

Rye police sergeant Warren Downs said: “Rye NPT have more of these operations planned in different locations throughout the Rye policing area.”
