The £250 donation comes from the Police Property Act Fund, made up of money received by the police from property confiscated by the court and then sold.

Trish Barnes, joint team manager, said: “The Hawks are a group of about 45 six and seven-year-old girls and boys who meet every Sunday morning to train and practise tag rugby. The managers and coaches are all volunteers and parents who have taken the necessary qualifications to make sure the children understand the technical skill behind playing tag rugby.

“But additionally, as the team ethos is inclusion and team spirit, a lot of emphasis is placed on having fun, general fitness, working as a team and maintaining discipline in order to achieve. Learning these skills at an early age will encourage the children to grow into a group of youths and then adults that as a society we can be proud of.

“Although the club is based in Angmering, it also attracts youngsters from Worthing and Arun. All children, regardless of ability, get equal chances to participate. This season the groups started to play in competitive tag rugby festivals with other clubs from across Sussex. The police donation will help to provide a shelter for use at home and away rugby events and festivals for the under-seven tag team.”

Police community support officer Becks Bernier said: “It is a pleasure to provide this donation and enable the club to buy a shelter that will benefit the team at fantastic community events.”
