She explained: “The home assistance project is a great example of an innovative local project that aims to make our communities safer.

“Since the community fund launched in December 2013, over 150 applications have been submitted and more than £400,000 made available to support local crime reduction and community safety initiatives.

“I am delighted with the response so far, which tells me local organisations and community groups care about – and are committed to – helping keep Sussex safe.”

Jim Funnell, Adur District Council’s executive member for customer services, and Mary Lermitte, his counterpart in Worthing, received the cheque from Mrs Bourne.

They said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this grant from the Safer in Sussex Community Fund. It will be used to help us continue making vulnerable people, and those at risk of violence, feel safer in their homes, whether living in the Adur or Worthing area.”

Mrs Bourne said she looked forward to visiting the team at Adur and Worthing and following the progress of their project over the coming months.
