Police halt kerbside car sales

BEXHILL police have put an end to illegal street trading on Lewis Avenue at the Glyne Gap roundabout, and local residents are delighted.

A constant stream of cars parked with For Sale notices proved to be an eyesore and danger, with complaints of serious risk to pedestrians and drivers alike.

It was a daily problem for mother-of-three Justine Head who lives in the quiet street once dubbed "the cheapest showroom in East Sussex."

"For the first time in three years we have no cars parked outside. It is wonderful."

"The police were up here taking details and then the last of the cars was taken away. There have not been any since. I have heard comments about how wonderful it is, although people are wondering how long it will last.

"But for now it's great to look out of my window and not see that whole parade of cars."

Previously Justine faced constant interruption from would-be buyers knocking on her front door because they assumed she was the owner of the cars.

She told the Observer about problems for pedestrians trying to cross with the lower kerbside blocked by cars, how drivers risked collision when they slowed down for a better view, and how some in the area felt intimidated.

Neighbour Jane Hamilton of Hastings Road said; "It's absolutely superb, I can't believe it. It's very much fingers-crossed that the problem doesn't come back but for now I have a clear view, I can even see the road sign."

Sgt Paul Masterson of the Road Policing Unit warned that the problem might return; "I am really pleased that everyone is so happy all round and would love to say the problem will stay away but it won't. It's a popular area so I think they'll be back, but we will push for double yellow lines there, or perhaps markings to keep the roundabout clear."
