Police have gotcriminals on the run in Rye

Known offenders responsible for mini-crime waves are now behind bars or awaiting trial.

Arrests have been made for violent disorder, suspected burglary and possession of an offensive weapon as well as for shoplifting and theft.

Rye police officer Paul Fielder told Rye Council’s public services committee on Monday: “I don’t think crime-wise we have ever been in a better position in Rye town going into summer.”

The news coincides with an announcement that newly appointed Sussex police Commissioner Katy Bourne will be in Rye on May 8 at 5.30pm. to attend a public police meeting at Rye Town Hall.

There is more good news too with Sussex Police donating £5,000 toward town centre CCTV cameras, in a scheme that sees police working with Rye Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber of Commerce is currently sourcing a company to carry out the installation of the cameras.

Outside the town, the Rye police team were involved in smashing a cannabis factory at Guestling, recovering 380 plants.

Police made a total of 27 arrests for drugs offences in the past year.

PC Fielder said: “An arrest was made for criminal damage at the Crown pub while Ivor Brinkley Junior was charged with possessing an offensive weapon and public disorder offences.”

PC Fielder said outlets in the town had passed with flying colours during a test operation to see if they would serve alcohol to an underage buyer.

He said: “Three test purchases were carried out and all three outlets passed with distinction.”

Sergeant Warren Downs, of Rye Police, said: “This sends a clear message to would-be criminals that crime will not be tolerated in Rye and the surrounding area and that we will take prompt and effective action. I would like to praise my team and those members of the public who have supported us by providing important information”.
