Detectives in Eastbourne investigating the recently reported rape of a woman 12 years ago have issued an Efit of the suspect.

The woman – who is 32 and does not now live in Sussex – contacted police this year to report that she had been attacked back in 2002.

She was walking through Hampden Park on her way home with shopping on Monday, January 21, when she was attacked from behind.

The man dragged her into bushes off a footpath and raped her.

He also subjected her to a beating and threats, before running off.

She did not report it to police at the time but came forward this year.

The suspect is described as being Asian in appearance, about 5’9 to 5’10”, in his mid-thirties, with thick black hair and eyebrows.

He was stocky, with a prominent jaw, and wearing a dark grey or black hoody, dark grey jogging bottoms and white trainers.

He had what is described as a ‘chemical aroma’.

Detective Sergeant Suzy Joseph said, “This victim has now found the strength to come forward.

“We take all such reports very seriously and want to hear from anyone who, even after all this time, recalls being in the area at the time, and can suggest who this man may be.

“We hope that the Efit will also help jog memories.
