Police horrified at neglected greyhound

OFFICERS at Bexhill police station were horrified at the condition of a dog brought in by a kind-hearted member of the public.

The brown greyhound bitch was found near to death and wandering in Chandler Road. She had no collar or name tag. Her racing identification mark was old and indecipherable.

The dog had been starved over a long period. She had been denied even basic veterinary treatment, according to a local vet who stayed up late to care for the abandoned animal.

The dog weighed just 16 kilogrammes, less than half her optimum weight. It is thought from her condition that she had been forced to sleep on concrete.

Police Neighbourhood Support Officer Andrea Gallastegui said: "Despite having suffered so appallingly, the dog, now named Marine, has won the hearts of those caring for her, due to her gentle demeanour."

Marnie is now being cared for in kennels. Despite initial fears for her life, she is beginning to respond to treatment and is putting on weight.

Sussex Police say they will support an RSPCA prosecution if Marnie's previous owners can be traced "as this level of cruelty cannot be tolerated."

Marnie is pictured shortly after arriving at the police station.
