Police investigating damage to historic monument in Alfriston

Police are investigating after a historic monument was reportedly damaged in Alfriston.

Officers were contacted by Historic England on January 13 to report damage to a Neolithic long barrow - an earth mound constructed between 3400-2400BC for use as a funerary monument and burial place by the area’s early farming communities.

The damage is believed to have happened sometime between December 23 and 28, 2015.

Any damage to a scheduled monument is a heritage crime and will be investigated by police.

A photo of the damage was posted on Twitter by the South Downs Ranger, who said it had been caused by illegal off-road use.
