Police motorcyclist deliberately rammed by car

A POLICEMAN was injured when a car deliberately rammed into his motorcycle in Climping at just after 6.30pm on Sunday evening.

Sgt Stewart Goodwin, of the Chichester Road Policing Department, had stopped the blue Ford Mondeo Si on the A259 near Climping Village Hall to talk to the driver and his two passengers about seatbelt offences.

But before he even had a chance to get off his BMW motorcycle, the driver reversed into him, pushing the bike almost 15 metres along the road before driving west towards Bognor.

Thankfully, Sgt Goodwin jumped clear and suffered only whiplash and bruising to his leg and shoulder.

He radioed for help and police cars and the force helicopter were scrambled but there was no sign of the vehicle, which had the registration number L638 FWL and was last registered in Portsmouth more than three years ago.

Sgt Peter Allan of Littlehampton police said: "Sgt Goodwin is very lucky to have only minor injuries. This could have been much, much worse."

Police are treating the incident as attempted grievous bodily harm and are asking anyone with information to call DC Jo French on 0845 60 70 999.
