Police name Littlehampton man killed after crash

POLICE have named the man who died after crashing into a wall in Littlehampton, on Friday (January 2), as 34-year-old Emmanuel Okonkwo.

Mr Okonkwo, of Norfolk Road, died despite valiant efforts from emergency services to save him, after his red Vauxhall Astra slammed into a wall at the junction of Fitzalan Road and Church Street, shortly before 1pm.

Firefighters from the nearby fire station in Maltravers Road went to the unconscious driver’s aid and began providing life-saving CPR.

They continued for about 40 minutes while paramedics and air ambulance crews joined the battle to save the motorist’s life.

However, a spokesman from Littlehampton Fire Station, said: “It was quite clear that no one could have got to him sooner than we did and provide him with the care that we gave. Unfortunately, on this occasion, the gentleman was pronounced deceased at hospital.”

A post-mortem examination into Mr Okonkwo’s death is due to take place.

The cause of the crash is not yet known and police are appealing for witnesses.
