Police officer charged over crash

A POLICE officer who overturned his car while driving through Lewes is to be prosecuted.

PC Anthony Crayford faces a charge of driving without due care and attention after an accident in Priory Street on February 20.

The firearms unit car had been on a routine patrol at around 4.30am when it hit a parked car and overturned.

A full investigation has been carried out and this week it was announced the driver of the car would be charged.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: 'As a result of the investigation into the collision involving a police vehicle in Priory Street, Lewes, on February 20th 2008, a report was sent to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in Kent for a decision.

'The CPS have subsequently recommended that the police driver in this incident, Anthony Crayford, is prosecuted for driving without due care and attention.'

PC Crayford is due to appear at Crawley Magistrates on July 1.
