POLICE OFFICER STILL OFF WORK

A POLICE sergeant who was injured when a firework exploded in his face at an East Hoathly bonfire is still on sick leave a full week later.

The sergeant was hurt while attending the event which was marred by random scuffles between groups of youths.

He was treated by ambulance crews at the scene and had to retire from duty.

A local youth was later arrested in connection with the assault.

Two other people were arrested for public order offences and taken to the Eastbourne custody centre.

A further three people were issued with 80 fixed penalty tickets for their behaviour on the night.
