Police praise forMay Day bikers

RYE police have praised bikers for their considerate riding over the bank holiday weekend.

Hundreds of bikers flocked to the Rye area on Monday as part of the big annual bike run from London to the coast.

Machines turned heads when they lined up on Strand Quay but there seemed to be none of the reported problems of previous years with bikes blocking pavements and shop entrances at the Strand or bikers pulling wheelies.

Police targeted bikers and drivers in a speed check at New Road, Rye a few weeks ago. A number of motorists received speeding penalties.

Rye police sergeant Warren Downs said: “I would like to say thank you to all the safe and considerate motorists driving through Rye for the May Day bank holiday.

“Sadly we did see a collision occur in the Icklesham area on Monday where a motorcyclist fell from his machine, but thankfully the rider escaped with minor injuries.

“It is still however a reminder of the responsibilities we all have when driving to remain cautious, alert and considerate of others at all times when out on the road.

“My teams will always police the roads in and around Rye and will continue to do so, particularly as the weather improves and we see greater volumes of traffic coming into the area in the summer months.

Residents can have their say on speeding and other issues at Police Neighbourhood Panel meetings taking place at Playden Oast on May 13, 8.30pm - 9pm and Rye Town Hall on May 14, 5.30pm - 6.30pm.
