Police praised in report

SENLAC police division has been praised in a report by members of HM Inspectorate of Constabulary.

Chief Superintendent Andrew Hollingshead of the IC says: "there is much good work being done" in the division, which includes Bexhill.

Their report recognises the efforts being made by the division's staff and officers and the high volume of work they have to tackle.

It also praises the commitment of officers and staff to providing a quality police service to the area.

The report says of the division: "...as well as the sheer volume of crime and incidents with which it has had to contend in recent years, it has also experienced significant levels of serious crime, some of which has attracted national and international coverage."

At the time the report was written, the divisional was handling a dozen separate major crime enquiries - including five murders and a manslaughter.

This had diverted resources from mainstream policing.

The report praises:

l Senlac's improved performance in the first threequarters of 2000-2001, especially improved detection rates

l The decrease in burglaries

l The decrease in vehicle crime

l The improved detection rate for violent crime

l The "robust" management of sickness levels

The report says performance figures are "mixed" and the division has faced considerable challenges over the years but is now in a position where better resources should enable it to embark on sustained and continuous improvement.

Divisional commander Chief Superintendent Paul Curtis says he is pleased with the report.

"I am also personally very pleased that it reflects the genuine enthusiasm of the officers and support staff in and for the division and its work.

"It's true to say that some of the figures they quote are disappointing but these were for the financial year 2000-2001 and, as we announced last week, since then we have had some excellent results with the total number of crimes solved on the division up by almost 50 per cent.

"These are a truer reflection of where we stand in terms of our performance and certainly reflect the extra money which has come in to the division since last year."
