Mr McDowell was walking on the pavement in Endwell Road near the junction with Wilton with friends when he was struck by a car. He suffered multiple fractures to the base of his skull.

Police diverted traffic from one-way Endwell Road down Eversley Road while DC John Stally repeatedly drove an M-registered Vauxhall Cavalier similar to the one said to have been involved in Mr McDowell s death from Wilton Road into Endwell Road against the one-way system and along the pavement where

Mr McDowell was hit.

DC Stally s speed was checked on each occasion by Sergeant Steve Grace of the Bexhill-based Traffic Division with a radar gun.

At the scene, Acting Detective Inspector Geoff Childs said: The aim is to try to establish what happened.

Our barrister has asked us some questions to which we want to find the answers.

We are using our crash investigation unit to establish at what angle the car would have mounted the pavement and at what speed.

Mr Childs said the reenactment was being conducted with the agreement of the judge and defence counsel.

The re-enactment had to be halted at intervals to allow buses and heavy lorries unable to make the turn from Endwell Road into Eversley Road to pass the incident site.
