Police slam shop’s bid to sell booze all night

POLICE have objected to a shop owner’s bid to sell alcohol 24-hours-a-day, saying it would encourage crime in the area and put children at risk of harm.

Jatinder Pal Singh, who runs Garretts Newsagents in Queens Parade, Lancing, has applied for a licence to sell booze around the clock, but police have recommended that Adur Council’s licencing committee reject the bid.

A police report said crime and antisocial behaviour were a problem in the area around the shop, and said the application showed no measures for ensuring staff safety or details of how staff would deal with trouble.

Police also criticised the application for not making sure there would be more than one member of staff on duty in the shop at any one time during the night.

The bid was due to be discussed by Adur Council’s licencing committee on May 15, but the meeting was cancelled.
