Police targeted in teenage rampage

YOUTHS moved on by officers returned minutes later to smash the window of a police car.

The incident, which happened in Hendon Avenue, Rustington, has prompted police to ask parents to "act responsibly" when letting their children out at night.

PC Dave Benham-Brown, of Littlehampton Police, said he was called to neighbouring Mewsbrook Park at about 10pm on April 11, by residents, after a group of about 40 12 to 16 year olds gathered at the recreation ground.

"The group dispersed as we approached, hurling torrents of abuse. We followed them to one end of the park, and while we were dealing with the large group, a smaller group split off and doubled back on us.

"They threw stones at the car, cracking the windscreen, and also bent the rear windscreen wiper."

He added that the marked Ford Focus cost more than 200 to repair.

"Anti-social behaviour by youths who have been drinking in the park has been increasing of late, and it is not nice for residents.

"I would ask parents to please ask where their children are going at night, and if they return smelling of alcohol, to take the appropriate action," said PC Banham-Brown.

Anyone with information relating to the damage should call PC Banham-Brown on 0845 60 70 999.
