The petition is the most popular to appear on the Parliament website, and had been signed by more than five million people on Monday afternoon (March 25).

A heat map of signatories showed that 26,610 people from Brighton Pavilion had signed the petition − that’s 24.6 per cent of constituents.

Hove wasn’t far behind, with 20,785 people in the constituency having signed the petition − 20.5 per cent.

In Brighton Kemptown, the figure was lower, with 13,668 signatures − 14.56 per cent of constituents − but it was still a high proportion compared to the areas.

The petition says: “The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is ‘the will of the people’. We need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now, for remaining in the EU. A People’s Vote may not happen - so vote now.”

In the Brexit referendum, 68 per cent of those who voted in Brighton and Hove wanted to remain in the European Union.

But the national result was 52 per cent ‘leave’.
