Arun residents urged to fill vote forms

THOSE wishing to have their say on who becomes the county’s first police and crime commissioner are being urged to complete their district election registration forms, this week.

Arun District Council has posted more than 70,000 copies of its annual canvass registration form to households in and around Littlehampton.

The forms ask residents to confirm who lives at the address and whether those living there would like to be excluded from the edited register. It also asks people to confirm those aged 16 or 17 living at the household who will soon be eligible to vote.

If residents’ details are correct, people can confirm this by phone, online, SMS text message or by posting the form back to the council – all the details are on the form that they will get.

The completed forms will give residents in the area the chance to vote in November’s election for the first Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner.

The successful commissioner will be in charge of setting out a five-year plan for the county’s force. They will also have a say on the police budget as well as the appointment of the chief constable.

Nigel Lynn, Arun’s chief executive and returning officer, said: “We always urge everyone to safeguard their right to vote by completing their canvass form.

People who are not on the register are not able to vote in local and national elections. They may also find that they are refused credit on purchases as credit agencies use the electoral register to determine applications.”
