The brand new public conveniences were open for just four months before being shut in early 2019 when defects were discovered.

Since then Arun District Council has trying to resolve the dispute with the contractor who supplied the toilets.

In the meantime temporary toilets have been installed next door during the summer months.

With the situation rumbling on for the best part of two years it has often been labelled an ‘embarrassment’.

But there has now been a breakthrough and repairs are now underway with a view to reopening the toilets as soon as possible.

A spokesman for Arun said: “Contractors are currently on site at the public toilets on Bognor Regis seafront. They are completing works in accordance with the settlement agreement. We have been informed that work is progressing well, and we will be visiting to view and assess the work.

“At this time of year, with the unpredictable weather to consider, it wouldn’t be realistic to make promises of completion dates at this stage, but of course we are aiming to have work completed to agreed standards and back open for the public as soon as possible. We are aware of how important this is to residents and visitors.”
