Back in December the Government pledged £350m towards easing congestion on the route including projects at Arundel, between Worthing and Lancing, and on the stretch between Lewes and Polegate.

Weeks before May’s general election a row broke out over speculation that Labour was planning to delay the projects to fund a one-year rail freeze if it formed the next Government.

Proposals to upgrade several junctions on the A27 at Chichester had been announced previously.

Speaking during Prime Minister’s Questions today (Wednesday June 17) Mr Osborne said they would ‘go on investing in the south coast’.

Standing in for David Cameron he added: “We’re going to continue to invest in road, rail and broadband across the south of England.”

After PMQs Maria Caulfield, MP for Lewes, said: “The A27 is an incredibly important transport link in our area and it is therefore fantastic news that the Chancellor reiterated the Government’s commitment to investing in improving this vital route.
