Councillor’s contribution to Worthing will be remembered by many

Tributes have been paid to a community champion who served Worthing as a councillor for six years.

Don Allen, who died this month, represented Broadwater from 2004 to 2006 and again from 2008 to 2012.

Council leader Daniel Humphreys said: “Don was a fine local councillor, serving as a champion of the community while standing up for the issues he believed in and the people he believed needed support.

“Sadly his health declined in recent years but his contribution to the town will be remembered by many.”

As well as serving as councillor, Mr Allen was a prominent member of the Salvation Army and chairman of Worthing Shopmobility, which provided transport to thousands of shoppers every year.

The council has confirmed the borough flag outside Worthing Town Hall will be flown at half mast on Wednesday (April 22), to mark the funeral of Norah Fisher.

Speaking about Mrs Fisher, Mr Humphreys said: “Norah was a remarkable person who, through her determination and warmth of personality, made an enormous contribution to thousands of people, especially those with mobility issues across Sussex.

“I speak for all councillors past and present when I say she will be remembered extremely fondly.”

Mrs Fisher represented Tarring from 2008 to 2016 and was mayoress to Bob Smytherman in 2013/2014.

She was involved with several committees working with disabled issues across Sussex .

Her rheumatoid arthritis meant she used an electric mobility impaired vehicle – and was well known for attending meetings with her beloved labradoodle Herbie at her side.
