The council was thrown into turmoil when Karen Sudan and Rory Fiveash, who are mother and son, quit within a day of each other, leaving Labour running a minority council.

Conservative MP Henry Smith took to Twitter today (July 1) and wrote: “In the midst of this CV19 crisis for Crawley, now is a time for stability not personality politics.

“With several borough councillors leaving the Labour Party this week over differences with their leader I believe the people of our town want us to concentrate on their needs first.”

When asked about the wording of his Tweet, Mr Smith said his understanding was ‘there might be one other’ councillor but ‘obviously I don’t know the details of that’.

He added: “I understand personality politics happens – and that’s unfortunate – but I do think it’s a time for us to not lose focus on the fact that, as a town, we’re dealing with a crisis.

“That’s where our focus should be. We need continuity where possible.”
