A sign promoting its parliamentary candidate Jeremy Quin in Guildford Road has seen part of the image torn off, while other posters installed the side of the A281 in Monks Gate, firmly secured on stakes, have been ripped out and left strewn across the main road.

Toni Bradnum, Conservative Party agent in Horsham, said: “To throw posters or anything else deliberately on to a road such as the A281 is disgraceful and extremely dangerous for motorists.

“I understand the police have been informed and I’m really sorry they have to spend valuable time on such matters. It’s a great pity these idiotic vandals have nothing else to do.”

Tory Francis Maude announced earlier this year he would not be restanding in the general election after 18 years as Horsham’s MP.

Other candidates vying to replace Mr Maude are Roger Arthur (UKIP), Martyn Davis (Labour), Jim Duggan (Peace Party), Darrin Green (Green Party), Morwen Millson (Lib Dems), Jim Rae (independent), James Smith (Something New Party).
