Veolia operates the Woodlands Composting Facility to the east of the A22, which includes a waste reception area, composting tunnels, maturation hall, refining hall, final product storage hall, access/circulation areas, and biofilter plant.

Its application to vary conditions to allow lorries to access the site an hour earlier on weekdays was approved by East Sussex County Council’s planning committee on Wednesday (April 13).

Amendments to conditions relating to noise was also agreed by councillors.

Although several residents and Chiddingly Parish Council called for the application to be rejected, officers explained that any noise from HGVs using the site would not have any material effect on residents as the ‘overriding noise’ was from traffic using the A22, while other firms in the same business centre had more generous operating hours.

Richard Stogdon (Con, Crowborough), vice-chairman of the planning committee, said: “We reviewed the site before the facility was constructed and all the issues were carefully considered.

“These noise objections in this case I do not think is one that can be substantiated.”
