Family launches campaign for permanent memorial to Ditchling’s Dame Vera Lynn

A campaign is being launched by the family of Dame Vera Lynn, backed by Sir David Amess MP, for a permanent memorial to one of the most loved stars this country has ever produced.

Dame Vera, who lived in Ditchling, holds a special place in the hearts of everyone in the UK for her wonderful, uplifting singing during the the Second World War.

On Friday the campaign will be launched calling for a memorial to be sited on the iconic White Cliffs of Dover, immortalised in Vera’s most famous song, to be a permanent reminder to future generations of what the Forces’ Sweetheart accomplished and how much she was loved.

The project has the backing of Dover MP Natalie Elphicke and Dover Council.

Sir David said: “A memorial to this wonderful lady is long overdue and what better place to have it but on the White Cliffs of Dover. Dame Vera was an inspiration to every generation and her Children’s Charity will make sure that her legacy endures.

“I look forward to unveiling the memorial, which will be created by renowned sculptor Paul Day, with Dame Vera’s family.”

The memorial will be paid for by donations and public subscription and details of how to contribute will included in a promotional video which will premiere on YouTube tomorrow, featuring Katherine Jenkins OBE, Sir Tim Rice, Sir Paul McCartney and Anthony Andrews.
