Flats could replace Littlehampton’s old market

Plans to demolish the old Littlehampton Market building and replace it with flats and a shop have been submitted two years after a similar idea was refused.

In April 2018, The Hyde Group asked permission to replace the building, in Surrey Street, with a part two-storey, part three-storey block of three flats, complete with a ground-floor shop.

It was refused by Arun District Council due to concerns about the design, height and scale of the development.

The latest application from The Hyde Group is for the same number of flats and the shop but the height of the ridge-line of the building will be no higher than its neighbours.

It includes an under-croft with parking for three cars.

In a design statement submitted with the application, a spokesman said the boarded up market building ‘detracts from the character and appearance’ of the area and was ‘a poor neighbour to the listed buildings on either side’.

He added: “The proposed redevelopment would result in a sympathetic replacement building that would sit quite comfortably with its neighbours and ensure an appropriate setting for the listed buildings.”
