Flats proposed near St Leonards seafront

Developers have put forward proposals to build a block of flats to the rear of St Leonards seafront.

In a planning application submitted to Hastings Borough Council, developer Gallium Homes Ltd is seeking permission to build a block of 15 flats and maisonettes on a brownfield site to the rear of 111 Marina.

According to developers, the site could accommodate a block of 13 flats and two maisonettes as well as 15 off-street parking spaces, with vehicle access via Sussex Road.

In a design and access statement submitted as part of the application, a spokesman for the developer said: “The site is currently underused. It was originally developed as mews stabling and associated quarters, but is currently making no positive contribution to the townscape or the wider economy.

“There is an urgent need for good quality housing in the area and this previously-developed site can contribute towards this need.

“A sensitively designed housing scheme for the site would bring the land back into productive use and contribute towards the requirement for new housing.”

Developers go on to say the building would not be visible from Marina nor disrupt the skyline of the surrounding listed buildings.

According to developers each of the 13 flats would include two bedrooms, although the majority (10) would be designed to accommodate three people.  The remaining three would be designed to accommodate four people.

Both maisonettes would have two bedrooms and designed for three people.
