The idea of buying up the building in North Road was first publicly floated back in 2018.

Officers are asking to go ahead with the acquisition, costing £850,000 plus stamp duty and fees.

The council would then work up options for the site’s redevelopment and future use.

A budget of £200,000 would cover initial design fees.

According to officers: “The purchase of the Lancing Police Station site by Adur District Council will enable the council to bring together various stakeholders interested in investing in the town. Development of the site will create a further positive example that development within the village centre is both welcomed and a sound investment.”

Their report noted how the village had experienced recent positive investments such as the Roffey Homes development in South Street, the conversion of the Luxor Cinema and the completion of improvements at the AMEX elite football performance centre.

It goes on to describe how a number of options have been considered for the site including medical, retail and residential, adding: “However, given the site’s prominence and importance, officers intend to undertake some wider community and stakeholder engagement before determining the future end use for the development.”

A housing led development is expected to cost between £6.6m and £6.8m depending on the number of units delivered.

Officers concluded: “A further report will be presented to members later in 2021 following the consultation exercise which will finalise the development options.”
