The building, in Surrey Street, was used as a heritage centre until it closed in 2018.

Now the first and second floors will be converted into accommodation, with two one-bedroom suites and a two-bedroom suite on each floor.

The ground floor restaurant use and the third floor viewing tower will remain unchanged.

The plans were approved unanimously at a meeting of Arun District Council’s development control committee last week.

Members were told the changes would ‘not only help to maintain the future of the Look & Sea Centre but also to help with the regeneration of Littlehampton town centre as a whole’.

They all agreed, with Jacky Pendleton (Con, Middleton-on-sea) calling it ‘a jolly good idea’, while Martin Lury (Lib Dem, Bersted) said it was ‘a very good use of the premises’.

Their views were not shared by Littlehampton Town Council.

Members had objected to the plans, saying community facilities such as the centre should be protected and the space should be used as a visitor information point to boost tourism.
