Housing next to Langney Shopping Centre approved

At a meeting on Tuesday (January 21), Eastbourne Borough Council’s planning committee approved amended proposals to build 10 houses on the site of the former valet car service at Langney Shopping Centre.

An earlier version of the scheme had been before the committee in December, but saw concerns raised over its proposals to access the site via Swanley Close. 

In light of these concerns, which had first been raised as part of a separate but nearby development on the Woods Cottages site, the committee opted to defer its decision and ask the applicants to look at alternative access arrangements instead.

The developer agreed, proposing an alternative access via Langney Shopping Centre. The layout of the site was also changed in efforts to avoid overlooking on to neighbours, officers said.

The decision to amend the scheme was praised by several members, including Cllr Candy Vaughan (Lib Dem, Langney) who said: “I am very pleased that they’ve come up with an alternative access route. 

“I think that takes off a lot of traffic through Swanley Close. It is quite small up there so I am very pleased that they listened.”

The development is expected to be made up of 10 three-bed houses, laid out in a cul-de-sac around central ‘court’ parking and access road.

It is also expected to include a total of 23 parking spaces, made up of two spaces for each of the ten dwellings and three additional visitor spaces.
