Lewes MP launches eTickets readers at railway station

New eTickets or mTickets are an alternative to a paper ticket, meaning customers can scan a barcode on their smartphone or on paper printed from home. This can save time queuing for a ticket as passengers can simply scan their ticket at the barrier and go on to the platform.

Currently these readers are fitted at major stations such as London Blackfriars and Brighton, but Southern Rail is expanding them to medium size stations such as Lewes.

Mrs Caulfield said “I am pleased that Southern Rail has invited me to help launch their new eTicket readers at Lewes railway station.

“This new technology will help passengers to reduce their time in the ticket office and their interactions with rail staff which is important as we try to keep ourselves and others safe from Covid-19.

“Even once we are past the pandemic it will make it easier for passengers to quickly get their train without having to queue for a ticket, reducing any queues for those still wanting a traditional ticket.”

The technology is popular with customers, Mrs Caulfield said, especially with social distancing and other Covid-19 restrictions it is thought that the technology will prove even more popular with rail users.

eTicket readers are now at many stations in the Southern Rail area including Falmer, Eastbourne, Worthing, Brighton, London Victoria, and London Bridge.

Where eTicket readers are not in place the eTicket can be shown to staff at the barrier.
