Lewes' MP has questioned Southern's decision to introduce a temporary timetable from next week which could see another 350 services a day axed.

The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) claimed the Government has allowed Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), which runs the franchise, to make the timetable changes due to come into effect on Monday July 11.

This follows months of disruption due to staff shortages as the RMT and GTR are locked in a bitter dispute over proposed changes to the conductor role.

Lewes MP Maria Caulfield said: “The service being provided to rail users by Southern Rail remains unacceptable, and so some form of plan, even if temporary, should be expected.

“I therefore look forward to seeing the amended timetable tomorrow, so that I am able to see the proposed changes. I am however concerned that this proposal to amend the timetable will lead to an even greater dissatisfaction among rail users, particularly during peak times.”

“Regular commuters like myself will be only too aware of just how busy the train network is from the South East into London. This is the case when there is a good service running, and so it is my view that the reduction in services could have a real impact on rail users across the network.”
