Midhurst wishes farewell to council stalwart

At the full council meeting on April 19 councillor Steve Morley stepped down from Midhurst Town Council after serving his parish for nearly 14 years.

Councillors told to be 'very proud' of Midhurst skateparkSteve was elected onto the Midhurst Town Council in May 2007 and since then has served on all committees, most notably chairing the Finance Committee and also served as vice chairman of the town council in civic year 2019-2020.

In his role as Councillor, Steve has worked either individually or as part of a small team on a wide range projects, including but not limited to the August Bank Holiday Carnival Parade, Midhurst Street Parties and Highway reviews, spanning parking issues, congestion, air quality monitoring and the Community Speed Watch initiative.

Independent ‘disappointed’ to withdraw name from electionsSteve was instrumental in getting coach bays at the North Street bus terminus.

He also spearheaded a campaign to make Midhurst free of plastic bags, giving free ‘bags for life’ to all Residents, long before the Government initiative.

He has been the Town Council representative for the Pendean Sand Quarry review and the previous and current Midhurst Vision projects.

Carol Lintott, chairman of Midhurst Town Council, has served with Steve since 2007.

Carol wished Steve, his wife Hazel and his family well for the future, and said: “Steve has worked tirelessly for Midhurst in freely giving his time as a town councillor, working on many projects since joining the council in 2007 and in particular his persistency with the enduring issues of all things highways, from parking issues and pinch points in the town to getting the air quality on Rumbolds Hill monitored, Steve has campaigned to the relevant authorities for an overarching plan to ease congestion through the town using various measures and this work continues.

"Always volunteering for marshalling duties, litter picking, painting at The Old Library, photographer par excellence and generally pitching in for many a task over the years.

"He and his experience will be very much missed."
