John Chidlow (Con, Southwater) said: “I welcome this application, I thoroughly support the officers’ recommendation [to grant permission].

“Personally I think this is long overdue.”

Ian Howard (Con, Southwater), acting chairman of the committee, added: “I also wholeheartedly agree with this. It’s a good step forward for our waste disposal department.

“It needs to be set up because there’s more lorries to service and it’s good they can fit it in the same area.”

The site is between the park and ride and the Shell petrol garage. The two current buildings would be replaced with a single purpose building including a mechanics workshop, three internal bays to service the lorries, offices, staff breakout areas, as well as shower and toilet facilities.
