New waste facility would have '˜dominating influence' over Seaford Cemetery

Plans for a new building on the Cradle Hill Industrial Estate site, which is currently being used as a waste transfer station by James Waste Management, is due to be discussed by East Sussex County Council’s Planning Committee tomorrow (Wednesday January 13).

Residents have raised concerns that the 12.2 metre high steel-framed structure that it would have a ‘visually dominating’ effect over the other units in the estate due to its size and elevated location.

Planning officers have recommended it be refused by councillors on Wednesday, due to the loss of amenity for other businesses and residents, the impact of additional traffic, and the effect it will have on the use of the cemetery.

The officers’ report reads: “The new building would be significantly larger than the existing and would have a detrimental visual effect on other units on the estate, including the adjoining funeral directors and chapel of rest and on the adjoining cemetery and nearby residential properties.”

It continues: “The existing WTS premises are too small for the current operator but the proposal is too large to be satisfactorily accommodated at this site.

“Despite the benefits that may occur in terms of managing waste, it is considered that the proposed development is unacceptable in its impact on amenity, and, the cemetery as a historic asset.

“In addition there are potential impacts arising from increased activity. On balance, the application as it stands should be refused planning permission.”
