Developers want to build a sixth storey on top of Richmond House and a fourth storey over nearby Kinrara House.

The extensions would provide an extra eight and seven one-bedroom flats respectively.

Now a third application has been submitted for Gordon House with a fifth storey providing 15 one-bed and two two-bedroom flats.

Although applications have been submitted to Arun District Council, they are for prior approval.

This is under a new class of permitted development recently introduced by the government where detached blocks of flats can be extended by up to two storeys to encourage the creation of new housing without having to gain planning permission from a local authority.

External materials would look to complement the existing buildings and windows would be the same size and fenestration to ensure visual consistency.

The layout of the new floor for Richmond House would be the same as the existing flats above the shops, with staircases and lift shaft extended to provide access.

But at Kinrara House and Gordon House the layouts would be different from the floors below.

The council has already received objections from Kinrara House residents where they raise concerns about disruption.

One resident with two young children feels construction will ‘disrupt family life’, while another living on what is currently the top floor argued a new stairwell next to their flat would cause noise issues and affect their privacy.
