Projects for safer roads in Aldwick

Aldwick Parish Council members repeated their commitment at Monday’s meeting to ensuring the schemes in Fish Lane and Nyetimber Lane are installed on time.

The first project set to be undertaken is a pelican crossing to Nyetimber Lane to link the Willowhale Estate with the Avisford Park recreation ground.

West Sussex county councillor Tony Sutcliffe (UKIP, Nyetimber) said he had spoken to the county council cabinet member for highways and transport, Cllr John O’Brien, about the project last Friday. “I have done all that I can to progress it at this point,” he said. “It’s certainly been pushed as far as I dare.”

Cllr Lillian Richardson, the chairman of Aldwick Parish Council, said she had been assured the crossing was ready to be installed in the year from next April.

“Everything is together to have it approved. It’s a case of waiting for it to go into the integrated works programme for 2016/17,” she said.

“I’m anxious for Cllr O’Brien to have this at the top of his agenda.”

For Fish Lane and along adjoining Aldwick Street, the work will consist of traffic calming. Cllr Richardson said this was scheduled to be carried out in 2017/18 after preparatory work next year.

“We have to make sure it goes through at the rate at which it has been programmed,” she said.

Trevor Bence, an Arun district councillor, (C, Aldwick East) said he had ensured the works would stretch all the way along the roads. His talks with county council officers had left him hopeful the project would go ahead.

County councillor Ash Patel (C, Bognor Regis West and Aldwick) said it usually took two years to design and install such projects.
