Jeremy Quin was one of several MPs questioning the billionaire following the collapse of the high-street retailer last month.

Sir Philip was appearing before a joint hearing of the Business and the Work and Pensions select committees, and during the exchanges when pressed on why he sold the company to Dominic Chappell, he explained that he had number of respected individuals, including two City advisors, pitching for him.

Mr Quin said: “He could have turned up with the Archangel Gabriel you still did the deal with him.”

Sir Philip replied: “That’s a ridiculous statement.”

Mr Quin added: “You had a decision to take to sell the company to that individual.”

Minutes later, answering a question from another MP, Sir Philip said to Mr Quin: “Do not look at me like that. Put your glasses on you look better with your glasses on.”

Mr Quin responded: “Thanks for your guidance.”

Earlier this month, Mr Quin said: “I feel deeply sorry for dedicated staff members in BHS’s Swan Walk store and elsewhere across the country who now face huge uncertainty.

“We are determined to get to the bottom of what happened to BHS.

“There may well be much wider lessons that need to be learned about how very large private companies should be managed.

“We owe it to millions of employees in these companies to ensure good practice, which helps deliver good decision-making, is properly in place.”
