Penfold Verrall, which already operates a haulage and maintenance depot in Grinder’s Lane off the A24 near Old Barn garden centre, saw its bid for an inert waste transfer and recycling facility approved by West Sussex County Council’s Planning Committee on Tuesday.

Councillors voted to strengthen conditions relating to noise, including plans to monitor noise levels at the nearest residential property every three months.

Dial Post resident Stephen Bishop said that people in the village believed that the site was ‘totally inappropriate’ for a waste transfer facility.

But Adam Bish, a director for Penfold Verrall, said they had a ‘strong desire’ to make sure that their operations were not at the ‘expense of the local community’.

Local member Lionel Barnard (Con, Henfield) echoed residents’ concerns about the noise that could be generated from the site, and the effect of additional HGV movements on road safety on the A24.
