‘Renewed urgency’ for 30mph speed limit for North Horsham road

A cessation of litter picking in a Horsham road has created a ‘renewed urgency’ for the introduction of a 30mph speed limit.

Langhurstwood Road Residents Group has written to West Sussex County Council following Biffa’s decision earlier this year to stop clearing up rubbish between their site and the A264 due to safety reasons and the current 40mph speed limit.

Brian Johnson, writing on behalf of the group, said that although the need for a reduction has always been there due to the waste recycling operations at the Brookhurst Wood site, ‘there is now a renewed urgency to make this happen’.

He said: “Residents, and local people using this road for recreation, are forced to live with litter which is undoubtably strewn from waste carrying vehicles arriving and departing the Warnham brickworks site.

“As residents we pick up litter from our lawns on a regular basis. As you will be aware all municipal waste from West Sussex is treated at the Biffa operation, whilst Britaniacrest source waste from both inside and outside the county.”

He explained that the litter picking had ceased due to ‘alleged safety reasons, and in pressing for it to recommence we are advised that this is not possible due to the 40mph speed limit’.

He went on to say that Biffa’s ruling was that if the road had a 30mph speed limit the litter picking could recommence.

A speed limit on Langhurstwood Road was considered at the March 2014 committee meeting and was placed on the holding list of Traffic Regulation Order requests for further investigation.

The residents’ plea is due to be discussed by both WSCC’s North Horsham County Local Committee on Monday December 14 and North Horsham Parish Council on Thursday December 10.

Developers are bidding to build up to 2,750 homes and a new business park north of the A264.

The scheme is included in Horsham District Council’s recently adopted local plan, but a planning application has not yet been submitted.
