Should Horsham homeowners be allowed to rent out their driveways?

Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for the Department for Communities and Local Government, said that people should be allowed to rent a single parking space provided there is no nuisance to neighbours or other concerns.

Last week the RAC Foundation published national figures which claimed that Horsham District Council made £1.272m from parking in 2011/12, a number that the council disputed.

A spokesperson said that net revenue from council-operated town centre car parks totalled £1.4m, and its prices compared favourably to similar areas.

In a statement on Friday Mr Pickles said: “Councils should be welcoming common sense ways that help hard-working people park easier and cheaply and for families to make some spare cash. Councils shouldn’t be interfering in an honest activity that causes no harm to others, unless there are serious concerns. Parking charges and fines are not a cash cow for town halls.

“This government is standing up against the town hall parking bullies and over-zealous parking enforcement.”

Website Parkatmyhouse lists 25 driveway spaces available for parkers, ranging from £2-5 a day. One advertisment for 24/7 access listed a minimal rental cost of £1,800.
