South East devolution: Mid Sussex District Council leader’s response

The leader of Mid Sussex District Council has given a cautious response to plans for devolution in the South East of England.

If it goes ahead, the change would mean more powers and responsibilities for local authorities in the region.

West Sussex County Council is arguing that this will make it easier to co-ordinate services for residents, improving the economy, and attracting more investment.

It could also mean that local authorities would have to take on more responsibilities for road and rail infrastructure, health and social care, and employment.

Approached for a comment, Mid Sussex District Council leader Garry Wall said: “We are following the national debate on devolution with interest. However, we will need to very carefully consider the details of any proposals before we lend them our support.”
