The former politician also talked about the Southern Rail crisis at an interview last week with local station Latest TV.
Criticising his party’s current leadership, Mr Caplin said: “The party did have very strong messages on health and Brexit... but we’ve got this crisis in the health service - including at the Royal Sussex - and we’ve got a shambles on the Brexit negotiations or lack of. Those were two key points that affect everyone in the country. And instead of sticking to those two points, what Corbyn did was to go onto the Today programme and talk about maximum wage... I think what he needs to do is to stick to main policy areas and not his hobbies... There will be no impact now in the polls of any Corbyn relaunch.

“It’s not been the best start to the year for the Labour Party.

“I’m just shocked by the fact you’ve got mainstream major issues that are affecting every member of the public and you’re not talking about then when you have the chance.”
Mr Caplin had further words of advice for the Labour leader, on the shadow chancellor John McDonell, who visited Brighton on Saturday.

“I’m afraid, like most people, I don’t have any time for John McDonnell at all,” said Mr Caplin. “And I think one of the strongest things that Jeremy Corbyn could do would be to remove him from the shadow cabinet, because I don’t think he’s appropriate for the role of shadow chancellor.”
